Chapter Fourteen
Lee Crowther sat in the doorway of a newsagents, his collar pulled up and fingerless mittens clasping a polystyrene cup of lukewarm coffee as a prop. He kept his head down as Stephan entered the station, his black woolly hat helping to obscure his average features.
âSpare change?â he asked, as Stephan drew close but received nothing more than a âtskâ of disgust as the fine Italian shoes past him on their way to the lockers and another set of feet appeared.
âCome on. Off with you, you canât stay here.â
An overweight man wearing navy staff uniform and an orange high visibility waistcoat looked down at him and Crowther discretely showed him his badge and pressed a finger to his lips. Focusing back to the lockers, he watched as Stephan looked around him as he delved into his pocket for the key, oblivious to Lee still huddled in the shadows. With no obvious threat in sight, Stephan slid the key into the locker and opened up the door, only to slam it shut. The sound of the metal door echoed around the empty station and Lee remained silent as Stephan hissed loudly and clutched handfuls of his thick black hair. He had slammed it so hard, the door had ricocheted back open revealing an empty locker containing nothing but a note. Incensed with rage, he grabbed the note and opened it.
âFinders keepers,â he muttered, loud enough for Lee to make out the words he was reading.
The evening air was cold but it did nothing to prevent Stephan breaking out into a rage-filled sweat. Stuffing the envelope into the pocket of his trench coat, he composed himself enough to close and lock the door then spun on his heels and hurried out of the station. As soon as he had stepped outside Lee followed, discarding his cup in one of the few bins by the exit and slipping into his unmarked car to follow the taxi with Stephan inside. Keeping a safe distance, the cars wove their way through the streets of Hackney and the scenery soon changed from shops to residential houses, stopping at the bottom of Edmonton Road. Lee passed the taxi and parked further up the street, switching his lights and engine off as he watched Stephan through his rear view mirror. The taxi waited as he entered a property and posted a letter through the box then returned to the taxi. He sank down into his seat as it drove past, waiting for it to indicate which direction it would turn at the junction then continued to follow, making a mental note of the address he had just visited. Somehow it was linked but at the moment it was not clear how.
A pale, ghostly mist hung over The Thames the next morning doing nothing to lift Stephanâs mood. The night had seemed endless and although his eyes burned from lack of sleep, the confrontation with Shan Li vividly replayed in his mind. The situation had gone from bad, to worst.
